BMW 5 Series, i5 LWB

BMW is gearing up to bring the eighth-gen 5 Series to India, and it’s making quite an entrance with the long-wheelbase version, known as the i5 LWB. Set to debut during the 2024 festive season, this luxurious sedan is tailor-made for those who prefer a chauffeur-driven experience, offering extra legroom for rear-seat passengers.

Exterior:

The i5 LWB shares its roots with the standard 5 Series but boasts an extended length, making it about 145mm longer overall and featuring a wheelbase extended by around 110mm. Noteworthy exterior elements include the distinctive illuminated grille and sleek tail-lamps with a chrome strip. One unique touch is the illuminated ‘5’ on the C-pillar, glowing white for the ICE-powered models and pulsating blue while charging on the i5.

Interior:

Stepping inside, the i5 LWB impresses with a familiar yet stylish interior. The driver enjoys a 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster and a driver-centric 14.9-inch central infotainment touchscreen. While it’s uncertain if the fully vegan interior from the international 5 Series will make it to India, the focus is on the rear passenger area. With additional legroom from the extended wheelbase, rear passengers revel in reclining seats, four-zone climate control, exclusive quilting on upholstery, and a dual-tone design.

The rear entertainment setup is a showstopper, featuring a 31.1-inch 32:9 display that folds down from the headliner. This 8K resolution screen, coupled with 5G connectivity and the Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, promises an immersive experience on the move.

Powertrains:

In terms of powertrains, the i5 LWB is likely to come in eDrive40 form, equipped with a 340hp, rear axle-mounted motor driven by an 81.2kWh battery pack. BMW claims an impressive maximum range of 582km for this variant. While there’s an international M60 xDrive version with 601hp, its availability in India remains uncertain.

Price Range:

Competing directly with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the i5 LWB is expected to be priced in the Rs 90 lakh-1 crore range (ex-showroom). With its unique features and luxurious offerings, the i5 LWB is set to make a mark in the Indian luxury sedan market, providing a distinctive and comfortable ride for those who seek an elevated driving experience.
